Costa has been holding his breath and chasing fish since he was a kid. He has loved the ocean from when his mother first threw him into it (not a joke; that's how he learned to swim : ) Costa was a SCUBA diver for years, but the moment he took his FII Level 1 course he fell in love with freediving and never looked back. "With SCUBA you feel like a guest in the ocean. You need all that equipment just to stay alive, you're the loudest thing down there, you're blowing bubbles all over the place. Nothing else down there blows bubbles, it's embarrassing! But, freediving is different. Discovering that I had a mammalian diving reflex, that I was built to dive, that I belonged... that changed everything." As an FII instructor, Costa takes tremendous joy in sharing his love for the ocean with students. He travels quite a bit, and teaches in a variety of locations across the globe. He is also an innovation consultant working with the likes of NASA and National Science Foundation scientists helping develop innovative, interdisciplinary research projects.
